Building History

Over 100 years ago the Kresge Building first opened to the public. In 1899 Sebastian Spering Kresge introduced the concept of selling quality goods for 5 to 10 cents. The 5 and 10 store opened in downtown Detroit as a pillar of retail. The Kresge company, beginning in 1977, eventually grew into the K-mart corporation, which accounted for 95 % of its domestic sales. Eventually the Kresge Department store in Detroit closed in 1982.
